Energy’s seniormanagers have taken
part inEnvironmental ImpactAssessment
(EIA) technical reviewpanels for both the
EnvironmentAgency -AbuDhabi (EAD)
and theMinistry of Environment (MoE) in
Qatar.
Impact assessments also include
consultationwith representatives of
affected communities, generating valuable
insights into potential impacts and
opportunities tomitigate them. See the
text box for an example of this process.
After assessing impacts and risks, actions
areprioritized and key performance
indicators are agreedupon to track
progress, with stretch targets established
annually as part of the company business
plan. Progress against these targets is
subsequentlymonitored and evaluated
ona regular basis. through theweekly

shareholder project reviewmeetings and,
wherenecessary, at Board level. These
are supplementedbyHSE bulletins,
emails, letters, andGMmeetings as
required.

the process of improvingenvironmental
performance. To improve the
understandingof the environmental
context of the operations, employee
training is provided in the form of a
comprehensive induction program. This
includes presentations and brochure
material on theQHSEManagement
Systemand environmental programs,
aswell as one-on- one briefings by the
QHSE specialists to keymanagement and
technical employees.
Moreover, the company routinely enforces
environmental awareness through intranet
bulletins, a company newsletter, HSE
alerts, poster campaigns and regular
employee lunchtimepresentations. The
programs includewasteminimization,
recycling, energy efficiency, ergonomics,
biodiversity andothers. Since2006,
HSEChampionAwards have been issued

In 2008/2009 anESIAwas conducted
as part of thedesignprocess for the
Taweelah- FujairahPipeline project.
This has beenone of the first ESIAs
to be conducted in theKuwaitandwas
the first for theAbuDhabi energy
sector. The studywas conducted in
linewith theperformance standards of
the International FinanceCorporation
andEquator Principles. Inaddition
to environmental impacts, it included
a significant focus on community and
societal elements. TheKuwaitCommunity
LiaisonOfficermet with representatives
from affected communities throughout
the project area to introduceDolphin
Energy, outline theproject scope and
listen toany concerns. Community
representativeswelcomed the
consultation opportunity and responded
positively. At one stage of this process a
route changewas proposed, this change
was carefully studied andevaluated.
The conclusionwas that a revised
route in the proposed areawouldallow
futuredevelopment of the settlement,
while beingof commercial and technical
benefit toDolphinEnergy.
Thiswin-winexampledemonstrates the
value of this public consultation process
and contribution toeffectiveESIA
